~Chapter Seventeen~

Marva loved listening to Mr. Raymond talk about his daughter Wendy who wanted to become a nurse.

“Imagine this,” Mr. Raymond said. “Yesterday she came home with a skinny little kitten. It looked like somebody tried to drown it or something. She want me to buy a baby bottle so she could feed it.”

Marva smiled. “Did you buy the bottle?”

“No way. Ah tell her put some milk in a saucer —” His voice broke off and he looked past Marva’s head. Marva turned around and almost dropped the wrench she was holding.

“May I help you?” Mr. Raymond asked the newcomer.

Marva turned her attention back to the engine, wishing she could ignore the tall, balding man neatly dressed in grey pants, matching striped shirt and blue tie.

Mr. Raymond touched her arm. “This gentleman want to speak to you, baby. When you come back I’ll tell you about …”

Marva missed the end of his sentence as she stepped a short distance away where she hoped he couldn’t hear what David Bowen wanted to say to her.

“How are you doing, Marva? I would like you to come to the station with me so we can go over some things.”

Marva looked up into his expressionless face. Her heart beat a little faster, but maybe there was nothing to worry about. Maybe he was here to tell her he’d found the person who murdered her father.

She nodded. “I’ll ask my boss.”

She hurried over to the mechanic, now bending over the car engine. “Mr. Raymond, this is the detective who is investigating my father’s murder. I have to go down to the station with him.”

“Oh, yes?” Mr. Raymond walked over to David. “I hope you have something good to tell my girl here. She’s a hard-working girl. She don’t give us no trouble, so try your best for her, okay? She always worrying about her sister.”

“I will. I’ll bring her back soon.”

At those words, Marva’s heart lifted, but when she approached the unmarked car and saw the strange female in the back seat and another man behind the wheel, her heart plummeted. David opened the back door and she got in.

“This is Corporal Greta Stevenson, and Corporal Lance Phillips.”

Marva swallowed against the lump in her throat. “Good morning.”

They replied cordially and Corporal Phillips turned the key in the ignition.

David opened the yellow pad in front of him, then took a small tape recorder out of his drawer and turned it on. Greta had already seated herself next to Marva on a chair close to the wall, while Sanderson remained standing.

David gave Marva what he hoped was a reassuring smile. “Now we can begin.”

“Did you find the person who killed my father?”

David’s smile disappeared. Damn, she’s good. “No, I didn’t, but I hope you can help us with that.”

The girl stared straight at him, and David had a sudden desire to loosen his collar. He couldn’t tell if she was as uncomfortable as he was. Police stations were not designed to make anyone feel at ease, so any tension he detected in Marva’s body language could be construed as normal.
